Mayan Summer The Ystrelan Ambassador Spell, Book and Candle Scales |
![]() I’m so excited about this ninth issue of Khimairal Ink! By a quirky chance of fate . . . or a pre-destined cosmic convergence of related events, the selections this month are all speculative fiction. Which is science fiction/fantasy for most of us and by far, my favorite genre. As I outgrew my Nancy Drew adventures, Zenna Henderson stepped in and showed me different kinds with her “The People” series of short stories and novelettes about finding a new home on Earth. She was one of the first female science fiction writers in the1950’s, and was one of an even smaller number who wrote openly as a woman, without using male-sounding pseudonyms or initials--James Tiptree, Jr.; C. L. Moore; etc. (http://www.adherents.com/lit/bk_Zenna.html) Robert Heinlein cemented my love for this genre with his non-gender ideals. His heroines such as Podkayne of Mars were all based on his wife, Ginny. “Ginny is a chemist, biochemist, aviation test engineer, experimental horticulturist; she earned varsity letters at N.Y.U. in swimming, diving, basketball and field hockey, and became a competitive figure skater after graduation; she speaks seven languages so far . . ." Damon Knight in the introduction to The Past Through Tomorrow. (http://www.heinleinsociety.org/rah/biographies.html) The four acclaimed and gifted writers showcased in this New Year’s issue have captured the wonder and imagination of good speculative fiction that I love so much. Brenda Cooper takes us to a wonderful tropical setting in "Mayan Summer" where ancient treasures can show up in the most unexpected places. A Khimairal Ink favorite, Barbara Davies, entertains us with "The Ystrelan Ambassador," a fast-paced tale with the patented Davies’ twist at the end. "Spell, Book and Candle" by Catherine Lundoff reminds us that even a well-crafted spell can create unforeseen results. Martha J Allard’s "Scales" is a sweet tale of unspoken wishes coming true. When you finish these stories, make sure you check out our Contributors Page and discover more fine works by these writers. Have a healthy and prosperous 2008.
